ABSTRACT

This contribution begins by examining Swedish Welfare State urban planning, during the mid-20th century. It provides an overview of Welfare State political goals and visions, planning and legal instruments and systems, as well as the urban development that materialized as a result of this. Adding to this, the chapter then analyses the practical implications of the implementation of Welfare State urban planning and development, tracing its failures and successes, throughout its history until the present.

Through a comparative (historical) analysis the contribution then explores how urban planning and development in Sweden, has changed following on from the Welfare State, positively and/or negatively, and the differing reasons for this.

The main questions asked are:

How did Swedish Welfare State planning develop?

How has planning and development in Sweden changed from the Welfare State period to today?

This study is undertaken using historical and urban planning methods, including comparative (historical) analysis, case studies, and archival research, and draws upon planning and policy documents.
