ABSTRACT

The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely intertwined with the history of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning, which has until now been treated very selectively, both in a geographical sense and with regard to the topics covered. Too little research has been done into its entanglement with political power, for which it produced not only towns and cities but also narratives and programs. Today we can recognize how closely urban planning was tied from the very beginning to the growth orientation of both capitalist and state-socialist countries. The increased internationalization of European planning historiography enables us to gain a better understanding of the history of planning and the history of Europe.
