ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter offers a summary of the different contributions to the book. Three challenges are identified for the field going forward: the first is to achieve conceptual clarity about the concept of prison ecology; the second is to answer the question, “Why is prison ecology important?”; and the third is the need for better measurement technology. Nonetheless, we conclude that we can make our prisons safer places to live and work and that an ecological approach can help us to find solutions to the wicked problem of prison violence.
