ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the digital transformation of African micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) would allow them to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). It considers how the sophistication and complexity of the AfCFTA protocols contrasts with the limited capacity of MSMEs. The chapter explores why digitalising their businesses is necessary for MSMEs to participate and benefit from the reduced trade barriers that the AfCFTA will bring. The example of the South African Development Community (SADC) illustrates the benefits of regional cooperation in unlocking the benefits of the AfCFTA for MSMEs. Finally, the value of EU–Africa cooperation to open African markets and platforms for MSME participation is addressed.
