ABSTRACT

Inspired by the 2000 UN Millennium Summit and 2002 UN World Summit, the European Union Water Initiative (EUWI) aimed to coordinate EU and member states’ funding in the field of water development. The 2007 Joint Africa European Union Strategy (JAES) seeks to elevate the wider relationship to a strategic level. Digital water or the digitalisation of water is a concept that uses digital technologies to target urban water development. Digital water not only improves climate resilience but also reduces production costs and increases consumer affordability. Africa is one of the most water-stressed regions in the world. In its 2018 economic outlook report, the African Development Bank projected that the continent would need USD 66 billion per year to build water infrastructures to overcome water shortages. This chapter argues that the EU should deploy digital technologies to help improve water infrastructures in African countries and achieve its JAES objectives.
