ABSTRACT

Data has been identified as a critical component for implementing systemic circular economy intervention for plastic pollution. The inconsistency and divergence of data in published reports regarding plastic waste in Africa demonstrates the scarcity of accurate and verifiable data across the continent. Therefore, this chapter makes an argument for a plastic data exchange platform which can solve the data challenge in Africa. Using a practitioner’s perspective as well as drawing on the extant literature, this chapter answers the who, what and how questions of the plastic data exchange platform. In other words, it gives insights on the elements that are crucial for the platform such as the various organisations and institutions, the components of data that need to be captured, the tools and technologies that could aid effective data capture, storage and processing as well as the socio-technical interactions. This chapter concludes with discussing the significance of the platform and makes recommendations that could enhance the implementation.
