ABSTRACT
Bitcoin 1 was launched as a ‘digital currency’ in 2009 referred to as a form of ‘cryptocurrency’. Over the past decade, the price of Bitcoin investments rose from about $10,000 Australian to about $80,000 in that time. 2 However, it comes and goes and it’s fallen back to about $50, so it’s still a highly speculative and volatile asset class. 3 It has a lot of hype around it like a lot of new technologies. 4 Many people say that what we are now seeing with Bitcoin, Ethereum and other such offerings is just the front end of a ‘first-generation’ technological disruption of global financial, investment, savings and capital markets. 5
