ABSTRACT

Over the last four decades, gender equality and diversity have become a central part of mainstream higher education discourse and agendas. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides insight for leading change in higher education by addressing the equitable inclusion of diverse populations within the academe. It examines the ways in which gender intersects with other aspects of identity, such as social class, caste, age, disability, race, ethnicity and sexual identity, in shaping experiences of higher education (HE) in international contexts. The book explores ways in which gender for instance is reproduced and/or resisted within different country HE institutional contexts, as well as how gender can be re-imagined within these institutional, political and cultural environments.
