ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the International Handbook of Engineering Education Research (IHEER). Over the past two decades, the field of engineering education research (EER) has become a vibrant and impactful community with new journals, conferences, and doctoral and research programs established across the globe. This international handbook brings together 100 expert contributors from over 20 countries spread across five continents to author 32 chapters that address the state-of-the-art in engineering education. Readers who are new to the field of EER, as well as emerging and expert scholars in the field, will find the content useful, stimulating, and inspiring. Spread across six parts, chapters in the handbook review and discuss a wide range of topics pertinent to engineering education, including comparative research, engineering ethics, curriculum design, theoretical perspectives, research methods, and the use of technology and computing. Many chapters in the volume take a critical perspective towards developments within engineering education and argue for a more just and inclusive future vision for EER. Finally, findings related to advancing graduate education, faculty development, and teacher education are addressed, and so are affective and cognitive aspects of engineering learning.
