ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic considerations for conducting engineering education research studies using quantitative methodological approaches. Researchers need to carefully plan and design data collection and analysis using theory and existing research in order to have robust and meaningful findings from quantitative data. The chapter emphasizes that data is collected in context and that the context matters for the whole research process. Because of this, researchers should carefully consider the statistical measures they select and use to interpret their data. The authors also point out that quantitative data is one source of evidence among many, and researchers need to carefully consider what is appropriate and useful for their research studies.
