ABSTRACT
This chapter challenges the view that it is impossible to identify Jews in late antique papyri. That view, often predicated on the assumption that Jews were absent, tends to interpret the evidence in accordance with that assumption. By reversing the perspective to assume continued Jewish presence in the country, it is possible to reorient the interpretation of a number of contested indicators, among which are personal names and linguistic choices.
