ABSTRACT

How did the Donald Trump administration conduct policies toward Northeast Asia? How did its policy influence Northeast Asia’s regional dynamics? Many foreign policy experts characterized the consequences of Trump’s diplomacy as a crisis of US credibility, the weakening of the post-World War II international order, and the abdication of US hegemony. This chapter aims to go beyond such abstract notions and analyze more concretely how President Trump’s policies influenced Northeast Asia. This chapter examines the impact of his presidency on Northeast Asia’s regional order and regionalism in Northeast Asia, provides an overview of how these have affected the development of regionalism in Northeast Asia per se, and, finally, evaluates how Trump’s legacy, including shifts in perception inherited by the Biden administration, will influence regional dynamics for future.
