ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects upon a central question of Earth Day 2020: ‘What will it take to inspire a billion people and give them the tools to take action, to make a difference—and by doing so help to turn the world around?’ It presents the response of the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands to this urgent question, in an exhibition and community programme entitled Coral Encounters. Located on a low-lying island urgently affected by climate issues such as storm intensification and plastic pollution, the museum is well positioned to engage with local communities and relevant stakeholders at multiple levels. Climate action-focused art exhibitions have the ability to inspire audiences in a creative way, challenging local and international visitors in relationships with the environment. Coral Encounters was designed around the concept 164of ‘evoking wonder to inspire action’, encouraging viewers ‘to discover, and dive in, to make a difference’.
