ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the social role of museums and what it means for the communities they aim to serve. Through case studies from Belize, the chapter explores whether the development of local museums assists in creating opportunities for Garinagu to learn about their own culture through their lens; if it has encouraged participation in the safeguarding of their heritage or whether it has isolated them from the rest of the community. Approaching these issues from an institutional and political perspective provides insights for local involvement, building capacity and ensuring growth and acceptance.
