ABSTRACT

The Museums Connect programme funded by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), facilitated a partnership between two museums in Jamaica and the United States to develop the project Citizen-Led Urban Environmental Restoration implemented in September 2014 to July 2015.

Young citizen scientists in both countries worked closely with museum scientists to restore two environmentally degraded urban sites. Participants developed a broader knowledge and understanding of the biodiversity in both locations and the wider environment.

This chapter reflects on the benefits and effectiveness of education outreach and offers possible ways to improve natural history museum professionals’ engagement of citizens in environmental restoration.
