ABSTRACT
This chapter critically examines the Swedish state and society and explores characteristics that have been revealed through the pandemic crisis management. The chapter begins by problematising Swedish democracy and discussing Sweden’s crisis management first generally and then during the pandemic. The chapter moves on to argue that we need to re-conceptualise the nature of the Swedish state and society and revisits the concepts “state individualism” and “totalitarian democracy” to this aim.
