ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the developments supporting the nascent hydrogen economy in Japan, Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, and India. Japan has been a pioneer in shaping the global hydrogen economy and developing hydrogen technologies and applications across mobility and power generation over recent decades. As part of its domestic strategy for achieving and meeting its decarbonization plans, hydrogen development has had a major impact globally. A key part of Japan’s hydrogen strategy is working with Asian countries to share technology, finance the energy infrastructure, and support the development of regional hydrogen markets and applications. Japan, conscious of its energy security challenges, has focused on developing regional hydrogen supply chains to secure a stable supply. Japan has been a major proponent of hydrogen transportation pilots, with multiple trials conducted in various countries including Brunei, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East. Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries and India could provide Japan with an alternative hydrogen supply option and would be a competitive proposition for hydrogen imports from the Kingdom.
