ABSTRACT

For hydrogen to become the energy vector of choice in the future, a research, development, demonstration, and innovation ecosystem will need to emerge across Saudi Arabia. A substantial number of these activities will be conducted in universities, research institutions, and firms, where a pragmatic model is proposed to take research toward industrial deployment to achieve the Kingdom’s economic goals. This chapter examines global research, development, demonstration, and innovation spending, particularly on hydrogen-related technologies. It also describes the major technologies that Saudi Arabia can exploit in the short and long term. Finally, the linkage among the research, development, demonstration, and innovation components is discussed by delving into technology transition as a process, highlighting the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology’s innovation model as an example.
