ABSTRACT
Replacing horizontal slums with multi-storey vertical resettlement is found not to work efficiently for several reasons, as demonstrated in this chapter, especially but not exclusively for the case of mass condominium construction. Given abundant, well-documented evidence of mass housing’s failures, one may wonder why resettlement colonies continue to be built around the globe. The scientific community focused on housing research thus needs to critically assess its relevance in contributing to policy changes for practical improvements on the ground as even a substantial body of scientific literature documenting severe shortcomings of the resettlement housing approach could not keep policymakers and local authorities from further applying it.
