ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a historical analysis and framework for planning disability-inclusive mega-sporting events (MSEs) using a rights-based approach. It considers the historical perspective on the promotion of the right to sport for persons with disabilities and participation in MSEs and suggests key considerations in the planning and delivery of MSEs to ensure they address the human rights of persons with disabilities. The authors examine how MSEs can be a vehicle to support the realisation of the rights of persons with disabilities and how they can also be a platform for human rights violations. Before concluding, a set of key considerations and recommendations are offered for organisers of MSEs to deliver disability-inclusive events.
