ABSTRACT

Human milk is the gold standard in nutrition for optimal health and development of infants and children. Families who identify as LGBTQ+ should be given the same opportunities as heterosexual couples as parents who all have to make informed infant feeding choices regarding the importance and value of human milk for children. Not all people have the ability to produce milk and/or produce a complete milk supply and some of those who are able to produce milk may choose not to feed it to their infant. This chapter will focus on the science of human milk and the physiology of lactation in the context of LGBTQ+ families as well as opportunities to involve both partners in the care of the child and the lactating person's journey. Health care professionals should be equipped with current research and evidence based practice guidelines to effectively care for LGBTQ+ families.
