ABSTRACT

Accountability for the prevention and control of NCDs is important to drive progress and provide the foundation for advocacy, raising awareness, reinforcing political commitment and promoting action at global, regional and country levels. This chapter describes the following global accountability frameworks for NCDs: (i) the WHO global monitoring framework; (ii) a set of progress indicators for charting progress in policy, programming and governance against the commitments of the UN high-level meetings on NCDs; and (iii) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets and indicators. The chapter explains the role of the World Health Assembly in charting progress as well as the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs that leads the reporting on progress towards meeting the SDG targets. The chapter also describes the role of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, that has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs at the global level.
