ABSTRACT
The editors introduce the research questions at the heart of the volume’s contributions: To what extent and in what ways do associations independent of the state contribute to the protection of democracy? And what is the significance of civil actors for the construction and consolidation of democratic constitutional states, especially in relation to the protection of democracy by state institutions? They then explain the structure of the volume, whose authors combine historical and social science perspectives.
