ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates age bias in smart mobility to demonstrate the roles of transport systems, information and communication technologies, data and sensors in promoting or impeding mobility for all. In particular, it focuses on age discrimination in the unequal access to new mobility and transport services afforded to older populations. The analysis applies the mobility digital ecosystem approach, which investigates changes made possible by digital connectivity and data, to selected examples from smart transport services in London, UK. The chapter highlights biases in the design and operation of smart mobility and transport; related issues of age discrimination and social exclusion through mobility poverty experienced by older adults; opportunities for a more inclusive and sustainable mobilities for everyone; a need for interventions directed at the design of policies and services to achieve this.
