ABSTRACT
This chapter gives an overview of research to date in relation to spiritual abuse within Muslim contexts, with particular focus on UK settings. Focus is on three primary areas: the faith institutional context, the domestic sphere, and misuse of sacred scripture. There is acknowledgement that spiritual abuse is not limited to these settings. The chapter ends with a definition of spiritual abuse as the violation of a person's spiritual self, through the direct or indirect misuse or use of religious or spiritual position, trust, sacred text, or faith principle(s). Its impact, the researchers conclude, reaches a person's core being.
