ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with examples of projects from the practice of science communication using the storytelling method with a focus on sustainability communication. These examples include a dance theater, explainer videos, a web video, and games. All outlined examples are formats for communicating sustainability research and were selected on the base of their vividness, the diversity of their format, and their originality. The second part of this chapter describes why science communication is controversial and the questions about the impact of storytelling in science communication are addressed. The dual responsibility of science communication is described as a major challenge, meaning that the public is to be involved in scientific issues so that they do not simply dismiss them out of hand but on the other hand also that standards need to be maintained in communicating the sometimes dry workings and logic of science.
