ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss connections between video game play, design, and crafting from three viewpoints: (a) we look at video gameplay as embodied and productive practice; (b) we approach video game design as a domain that draws on craft values and principles; and (c) we introduce examples of hybrid games combining physical making with digital designs. Through this discussion, we bridge the seemingly ephemeral video game practices to making and crafting practices using various key concepts of embodiment. The goal is to draw video gameplay and design closer to material making in order to recognize the opportunities in this overlapping space.
