ABSTRACT
For reformist Islam thinkers, the defence of human rights is reasonable and consistent with the Islamic precept of justice. In this chapter, three post-revolutionary dissident key thinkers in political theology from Iran, who are influencing public debates about human rights among Muslims worldwide, will be introduced: Mohammed Shabestari, Abdulkarim Soroush and Mohsen Kadivar. They represent the dialogue of Islamic thought with Western political philosophy and the coming of age of the Islamic political theology reclaiming its pluralistic and democratic element. This case study unpacks these thinkers’ views concerning human rights.
