ABSTRACT

Macedonian cinematography continued with its successful streak despite the turbulent and uncertain period brought by the health crisis. Bitola and its surroundings, along with the capital Skopje, are usually the main production points in North Macedonia. A total of 275 films were screened in Macedonian cinemas in 2021, with a total of 141,767 visitors. The total earnings of the films were approximately 28 million Macedonian denars. Macedonian film festivals bounced back after the long hibernation after the autumn of 2020. Several festivals were held in hybrid form or online on the only Macedonian video-on-demand (VOD) platform Cinesquare.net, owned by Cutaway Production and Distribution based in Skopje. The most prominent and successful films in 2021 were projects with a majority of females in key roles. The North Macedonia Film Agency wanted to give recognition, motivation and encouragement to these women who are already recognized in European and world cinematography, as they continue on their successful journeys.
