ABSTRACT

Collective representation reserved for employees and excluding the solo self-employed (SSE) was constructed in the Taylor–Fordist paradigm. With its erosion, this boundary within workers is blurring, and the SSE are more often represented by traditional industrial relations actors as well as organising in alternative organisational forms. The chapter introduces the range of collective actors whose practices will be presented in the following chapters: trade unions, employer organisations, freelance associations, grassroots groups, and freelance cooperatives. The chapter concludes that there is no demise of collective representation of SSE workers, but rather a transformation in which actors representing and organising them play a crucial role.
