ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the nature of social justice related to democracy and the role of education in supporting it. We define social justice and democracy. The basis for analyzing social justice and democracy as essentially contested concepts (ECCs) is examined. The origins of the idea, its use in analysis, and the role of a shared vision are provided. Other examples of ECCs are discussed.
