ABSTRACT

With the concept of sustainability and its implementation in the context of education for the UN Agenda 2030 SDGs as a point of departure, this entry highlights fear and contempt toward other people, species, places, etc., as the longstanding cultural malady that underpins today’s interconnected social and environmental crises and predominant solutions to them. On this basis, and in partial contrast to the ESDGs, it then offers an alternative view of learning for sustainable transformation. Learning for sustainable transformation is rooted in critical, feminist, and anti-colonial theories and pedagogies. It is moreover transdisciplinary and transsectoral and aims at both the critical exposure of this culture of contempt and its social and environmental manifestations, as well as fosters diverse and equitable modes of collective thriving on this planet.
