ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with how to ensure that higher education can become an inclusive environment for transgender people. The chapter begins by describing some general sources of discrimination and harm towards trans people, and the ways in which trans people tend to become socially and economically marginalised, thus lacking access to public institutions like higher education. It also describes the specific and diverse challenges trans people face within higher education, either as students or as members of staff. Lastly, the chapter provides normative recommendations for making higher education more inclusive and how to better ensure the well-being and academic functioning of trans people in academia.
