ABSTRACT

The electronics industry has a long history of existence in Malaysia, and yet the industry has yet to upgrade into frontier technological operations. Consequently, using a sample of 50 firms and the systemic quad approach, this chapter assesses the extent of embedding institutional support that firms have enjoyed for technological upgrading with a focus on quickening the absorption of IR4.0 technological activities. The evidence shows that the extent of support from the science, technology and innovation infrastructure, especially for stimulating higher innovation activities, such as R&D, is below the mean out of a Likert scale score ranging from one to five. Hence, the chapter recommends a review of government policies to ensure that the ecosystem organisations targeted at supporting electronics firms are made more effective than what is there now.
