ABSTRACT

Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire constitute an internationally recognised migration corridor whereby Burkinabe migrants will cross the Ivorian border in search of better life opportunities. The dominant academic discourse in migration research often emphasises the flow of finances between places of destination and origin in the form of financial remittances, focusing mainly on remittances flowing from migrants situated in the Global North to their families in the South. Hence there is a dearth of literature examining the flow of resources within the context of the Global South in general and the African continent in particular. Using qualitative data collected in the Central-Eastern region of Burkina Faso, this chapter seeks to examine the multifaceted flow of resources within the Global South migration that goes beyond financial remittances. The data presented in this chapter and its analysis clearly show that returning migrants bring home new skills and knowledge acquired abroad. Migrants lived experience in the western African region clearly shows that, unlike the Euro-centric bias in migration research dominated by the discussion on the flow of financial remittance from the global North to the Global, intra-continental and intra-regional migration in the Global South is characterised by the flow of diverse forms of resources ranging from material, culture, the flow of business skills and ideas to finances.
