ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the Invisible Borders Trans-African Project (IBTAP), a road-trip initiative that explores and documents the African continent through photography and writing. Through the gaze of its founder and artistic director, Emeka Okereke, it emphasizes the performative nature of the project, as well as the importance of embodying African realities in order to convey African complexities through the potent mediums of photography, writing, and film. The project also aims to redefine the concept of African borders, recontextualizing colonial highways as a means of unity and trans-Africanism. The chapter describes the challenges and dynamics within the collective of participants, and concludes by emphasizing the project's goal of humanizing borders and promoting dialogue and understanding in a world increasingly shaped by geopolitical changes and climate issues.
