ABSTRACT
The legal system in Tanzania is primarily based on common law but also incorporates Islamic and customary laws, with the latter being applied to personal or family matters. The judiciary consists of various courts of judicature and operates independently from the government. Tanzania upholds and respects the constitutional principles of the separation of powers. The Constitution of Tanzania, 1977 provides for establishing an independent judiciary and respects the principles of the rule of law, human rights, and good governance (United Republic of Tanzania, 2005).
