ABSTRACT

Several legal bodies constitute the framework within which forensic psychiatry operates in Chile. The Political Constitution of the Republic of Chile, initially drafted under the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, was enacted in 1980. Pinochet’s regime governed Chile from 1973 to 1990 following the military overthrow of democratically elected president Salvador Allende. The Constitution (Ministry of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, 2005) has undergone multiple amendments since the late 1980s, with significant revisions in recent years.
