ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the reader to the topic of citizenship utopias in the Global South, and outlines the main themes and arguments of the edited book. Driving the project is the scholarly and societal need to provide a better understanding of the diverse emergent forms of activism in the Global South by investigating them in greater detail. To provide context, therefore, this introductory chapter discusses the complexities of nascent activism at the intersections of hopes and disillusionments, inclusion and exclusion, and revolutionary desires and their fragmentations and failures. It also contextualises the individual case study chapters within the post-pandemic global world of multiple crises, in particular the rise of populist authoritarianism and attacks on civic rights and freedoms.
