ABSTRACT

Wellbeing in the UK is defined as ‘how we are doing, as individuals, as a community and as a nation; and how sustainable this is for the future’. This chapter provides an overview of the UK’s approach to measuring and monitoring personal wellbeing. It also provides a summary of the work involved in key initiatives aimed at embedding wellbeing into policy, including the National Wellbeing Programme and the former What Works Centre for Wellbeing, as well as summarising the evidence of ‘what works’ to improve wellbeing at an individual and a community level. Priority areas for UK wellbeing policy are identified as work, income, society and governance, emotional mental health, relationships and communities. Six hallmarks for coherent wellbeing policy-making are also presented.
