ABSTRACT
Family wellbeing is not only an essential aspect of individual wellbeing but also an important indicator of the development and welfare of a society overall. In this chapter, we summarize the theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches adopted in studying family wellbeing and discuss the importance of family wellbeing for family research, evidence-based policy-making, and service planning. We introduce the development and application of the Hong Kong Family Wellbeing Index as an empirical example to illustrate the driving force, procedure, and considerations involved in creating a comprehensive measurement to assess family wellbeing of a region. We also discuss the key issues in studying family wellbeing, identify existing knowledge gaps, and suggest actionable endeavors for future research and practice.
