ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the collaborative efforts to decrease violence and advance peace through curriculum and programming focused on social justice and peace. Through a series of interviews, focus groups, surveys, and case studies, music, written and spoken word, mentorship, and project-based learning activities were developed and implemented in response to community violence. Throughout this chapter, we highlight strategies that center youth development, art, and culture to advance peace. This chapter describes efforts to train peer mentors and adults to support youth and prepare them for work, with the intention of decreasing violence. Additional practices highlighted in this chapter include spiritual practices and civic engagement to increase community and personal safety. Findings suggest that activities that support youth leadership and growth can foster hope, and hope can help advance peace. Mentors, lessons, and opportunities can be used to develop hope using rich art and cultural tools.
