ABSTRACT
Enlarging on the themes presented in the preceding chapters, the context of heritage and climate change in present-day society is discussed by the editor of the book and specialist in digital documentation of historic harbours, Elizabeth Shotton, with the critical heritage expert, Dr Linde Egberts. In light of the current threats to maritime heritage, Egberts’ work on critical heritage approaches to landscape, spatial planning, climate change and resilience is of interest to frame this current volume of essays. Egberts works in the interdisciplinary field of Heritage Studies and trained as a human geographer and cultural historian at Utrecht University and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she defended her PhD thesis Chosen Legacies in 2015.
The conversation explores issues of peripheral heritage, the threat of climate change and different approaches to future adaptation strategies, and the agency of communities and various experts in determining the fate of maritime heritage. The chapter is an edited and rewritten version of the dialogue held in December 2022.
