ABSTRACT
Recent years have seen an uptick in interest regarding extremists’ exploitation of gaming, gaming spaces, and gaming-related content. Unsurprisingly, the concerns surrounding extremists’ exploitation of gaming have been accompanied by questions on how to counter, prevent, and mitigate such exploitation. This chapter provides an overview of current digital, gaming-related campaigns to prevent and/or counter (violent) extremism (P/CVE) ranging from the production of bespoke prevention games and the utilization of existing games to the use of gaming aesthetics or gamification applications. In doing so, it also examines gaps in current approaches, challenges for P/CVE practitioners, and opportunities to improve prevention efforts in gaming spaces.
