ABSTRACT

This chapter presents discussions on qualitative research relevant to current research on ELT in Indonesia. First, the Introduction section concisely discusses the trend of qualitative research in ELT worldwide to suggest the importance of qualitative research in the Indonesian setting. Then, the Theoretical Framework section characterizes principles of qualitative research applied in ELT research methods, including observations, interviews, discourse completion tasks, action research, ethnography, and narrative inquiry. The following section presents current research on ELT in Indonesia by focusing the discussion on trends pertinent to common themes, research practices, and research ethics issues drawn from the extensive literature on current research on ELT in Indonesia. The specific areas of discussion are selected to pinpoint research topics that are ideally suited to be investigated using qualitative methods and illustrate how the simultaneous, nonlinear, and iterative nature of qualitative research can be put into practice while upholding research ethics. Finally, the conclusion section puts forward ideas for future directions of ELT in Indonesian qualitative research.
