ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the role that natural light (in the form of the sun, moon, and even stars) in the evolution of life on earth. We will first discuss how natural light has shaped the seasons, lunar cycles, and daily activity patterns. We will then highlight how the current impact of artificial light at night influences these long-existent patterns with a focus on how different aspects of light (placement, intensity, duration, and colour) may be important. Finally, we will explore the conflict between human desire for nocturnal brightness and the impact for the rest of life on the planet and provide some suggestions for mitigation and resolution to benefit both humans and wildlife.
