ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to explore the temporal and functional intersections between the establishment of residential areas and the shaping of public spaces as part the Lisbon Metropolitan Area's urban development. Resorting to a redrawn interpretation of historical cartography and to iconographic analysis of a complex residential area located in Lisbon's northwestern border, a progression in public space policies and designs as pivotal elements in its transformation can be identified. As a result, three key infrastructural moments in public space design are outlined and related to overarching trends in the metropolitan urban development.
