ABSTRACT

The construction of Barcelona's metropolitan public space network has been a dynamic process both in time and space, and a multifaceted transformation that is being developed through different strata. To facilitate its understanding, we have chosen to make this reading through three distinct layers. The first one corresponds to the renewal of public space through interventions in local urban fabrics in different municipalities of the metropolitan area; the second layer concerns actions related to the blue-green infrastructures; the third section is devoted to the set of projects and interventions closely linked to metropolitan roads and mobility issues. Through these multiple interventions, a genuinely metropolitan public space is emerging. It plays a major role in the environmental sustainability of the city, while offering the qualities of urban places (accessibility, vitality, beauty) in the totally different reality of the discontinuities and ‘disorders’ of the metropolitan landscape.
