ABSTRACT

Public and media communication is crucial when it comes to climate change. While legacy media outlets remain significant sources of climate change news for many people, social media platforms have increasingly influenced public perceptions and attitudes toward this global challenge. In recent years, the importance of visual content, including images and videos, has grown substantially within both news media and social media landscapes. Visuals possess the ability to attract audiences, capture their attention, foster engagement, and can be easily disseminated across national, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. Therefore, understanding the visual communication of climate change on news and social media is of vital importance.

This chapter provides an overview of how scholars, particularly those within the Science and Technology Studies (STS) field, have approached the visual communication of climate change. Then, it presents a summary of existing research conducted in the field on both news media and social media. Finally, this chapter outlines potential future directions for research of visual communication on climate change.
