ABSTRACT

In this chapter I examine the concept of trust and how it can be useful to the study of the science-policy interface. To illustrate this, I provide examples of trust and distrust in climate science related to the divide between Global South and Global North. I present the views on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of groups of Brazilian scientists and policymakers and disagreements over the creation of a Brazilian Panel on Climate Change. Finally, I discuss the links between trust and climate denialism and the tactics deployed by denialists to manufacture false scientific controversies in order to foster public distrust in climate science.
